Does Medicare cover the Diabetes Prevention
Program? Is it really no cost to you?
Yes. If you qualify, you pay nothing.
  • MDPP is a Medicare Part B preventive service, with no copay and no deductible
  • Medicare-enrolled suppliers like Lark can’t bill you for program services
  • Medicare Advantage plans must cover MDPP too, though some require an in-network supplier
Is Lark part of Medicare?
No. Lark is a private digital health company enrolled with Medicare as an MDPP supplier.
  • Medicare pays Lark to deliver the program to people who qualify
  • Joining doesn’t change your Medicare coverage, plan, or doctors
  • Your information is protected under HIPAA
Can I join if I have a Medicare Advantage plan?
Yes. This is a Medicare benefit under both Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage plans.
  • You’ll need to meet the same requirements as everyone else, including having Part B.
How does Lark’s Medicare Diabetes Prevention
Program work?
If you qualify, the program covers 12 months of coaching and support, and you won’t be billed for program services.
  • Weigh-ins: a connected scale syncs your weight to the app
  • Digital health coach: checks in day or night, weekends included
  • Short weekly lessons: food, activity, sleep, and stress
  • Lifestyle coach: a trained person to talk things through whenever you’d like
Can I do the Medicare Diabetes Prevention
Program online?
Yes. As of 2026, Medicare covers MDPP fully online.
  • With Lark, the whole program happens on your phone, so there’s no class to find or travel to
  • Your weigh-ins automatically sync to the Lark app
  • A digital coach is available 24/7, with a trained lifestyle coach when you want to talk to a person
Who is eligible for the Medicare Diabetes
Prevention Program?
You may qualify if all of these are true:
  • You have Medicare Part B, through Original Medicare or a Medicare Advantage plan
  • A blood test in the past 12 months showed prediabetes, and your BMI is 25 or higher (23 or higher if you’re Asian American)
  • You’ve never been diagnosed with type 1 or type 2 diabetes (diabetes during a past pregnancy doesn’t count)
  • You don’t have end-stage renal disease (ESRD)
What A1C or blood sugar level qualifies
for the Medicare Diabetes Prevention Program?
You need one of these results from a blood test within 12 months before your first session:
  • A1C: 5.7% to 6.4%
  • Fasting blood sugar: 110 to 125 mg/dL
  • 2-hour glucose tolerance test: 140 to 199 mg/dL
Do I need a doctor’s referral to join MDPP?
No. Medicare doesn’t require a referral.
  • You do need a qualifying blood test from the past 12 months
  • No recent test? Ask your doctor about an A1C test, which Medicare covers at no cost for people at risk
  • It’s still a good idea to let your doctor know you’re joining
Can I join the program again?
If you complete the program, you can’t re-enroll. That’s why we encourage you to use all 12 months, at your own pace.
  • The same is true if you become ineligible during the program, for example after a new diabetes diagnosis, developing end-stage renal disease (ESRD), or losing Medicare Part B.
  • If your situation changes, contact us and we’ll explain what it means for you.
