In this article:

  • Drinking more can help you lose weight by reducing your appetite, increasing energy levels, and reducing the calories you consume.
  • Ice water and sparkling water are good choices if you don’t like plain water. You can also change the taste of water with healthy additions such as fruit or herbs.
  • Setting a timer and putting water in visible places can help you remember to drink throughout the day.
  • Lark has more tips for weight loss and healthy eating.

Are you looking for a weight loss boost that doesn’t involve depriving yourself? Have you thought about drinking more water? Water is an essential nutrient that is critical for life itself, and it can also help with weight loss.

According to a systematic review of six randomized controlled trials, people who increased their daily water consumption lost more weight. On average, participants in these studies lost 5.15% of their body weight! That’s enough to improve risk factors such as high blood sugar, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. Challenge yourself to get up to eight cups, or 64 ounces of water, each day. If you’re already there, you can aim to drink more.

How Water Can Help You Lose Weight

Take a look at some reasons why water can be a powerful weight loss aid.

  • Water reduces appetite.

Simply put, drinking water means you are putting something in your stomach. That leaves less room in your stomach for other things, such as high-calorie foods. Plus, Lark can guide you towards eating more high-volume foods to help fill your stomach without adding many calories.

There’s another reason why water can reduce appetite. Your brain sometimes confuses hunger with thirst. That can mean that when you’re thirsty and your body needs water, you think you’re hungry and you eat food that you don’t actually need. With Lark, you can practice eating mindfully and noticing your hunger and thirst signals.

  • Drinking water increases metabolism.

When you drink water, your body needs to process it. Anytime your body does something, it burns calories, which is how drinking water can increase metabolism. This is explained in a review article published in 2023.

  • Staying hydrated improves energy levels.

Even mild dehydration can make you feel tired or give you headaches. When you feel lethargic, you’re less likely to move or get in a workout, so you won’t burn as many calories throughout the day. If you’ve been short on water consumption, drinking more is one way to feel better and get motivated to work out. Lark can also help boost motivation.

  • Swapping for sugary drinks saves calories.

One of the most effective ways that drinking more water can help you lose weight is if you use water to replace sugar-sweetened beverages, such as soda, flavored coffee, sweet tea, sports drinks, fruit drinks, and energy drinks. Swapping water for sugar-sweetened drinks can save you calories, sugar, and carbs.

Tips for Drinking More Water

Now that you know why drinking more water can help with weight loss, how can you drink more water each day? Here are some tips to help.

Make a strategy.

How will you drink more water? Here are some ways.

  • Drink a cup of two before each meal, just like participants in a clinical trial did as they successfully lost weight.
  • You could add a cup or two of water when you wake up, mid-morning, and in the early afternoon.
  • You could drink water instead of other beverages.

Make it interesting.

There are ways to jazz up your water if you don’t like plain water or if the taste gets boring for you. Ice water and sparkling water can make a difference. You can also try adding any of the following to give it a different taste.

  • A wedge of lemon, lime, or orange
  • Sprigs of herbs, such as mint or basil
  • Cucumber slices
  • Fresh ginger
  • Slices of pineapple, peach, or strawberry

Help yourself remember.

Setting a timer at regular intervals can help you remember to drink more water. For example, you could aim to drink a cup of water every two hours throughout the day. Or, you could set an alarm for the times when you want to drink water, such as at 7:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m., and 2:30 p.m.

Another good way to remember is to make your water visible. You can put a pitcher of water at the front of your fridge, and put bottles of water where you will see them, such as on the counter, near your computer, and in the car. These are the kinds of tricks that Lark can offer.
